What is Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii?
First discovered by the Swedish Naturalist Peter Forskal (and subsequently named after him!), Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It closely resembles a brighter, more colourful nettle in appearance which is probably why one of its nicknames is the 'painted nettle'.
What's really fascinating about this plant is that its name "coleus", actually refers to a defunct genus. Nowadays it is more frequently referred to as Solenostemon scutellarioides. A name which means "resembling the genus Scutellaria". This is the story of how this enduring, vivid little plant came to be known as one of history's most potent little tonics.
Plectranthus barbatus (as it is officiallyl known) is a tropical perennial plant which produces an incredibly helpful chemical called forskolin. It is mainly the root which gets used for its benefits and has been used by the Marathi to make a pickle known as MainMula. This pickle was thought to strengthen the muscles of the heart. Amusingly, In Kenya it has been known as Kikuyu toilet paper, such is its abundance in rural areas.
Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii comes from Nepal, where it has been used for centuries by Ayurveda to treat skin, heart and lung conditions. Today we are lucky to understand just how useful forskolin is in the fight to keep our metabolic balance at a healthy level and keep us from gaining too much weight (as part of a healthy diet, of course!).
What is Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii used for?
Also known as 'falso boldo' in Brazil, where it is used similarly, Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii works by mildly stimulating metabolic activity. It increases thyroid hormone activity and subsequently increases the secretion of insulin. The diterpenoid forskolin is actually the only plant based compound which can directly stimulate the enzyme adenylate cyclase.
The result is further activation of cellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) which boosts our metabolism. As we all know, a stronger, higher metabolic rate means two things. First that we are using our food properly and healthily, converting it into much needed energy for our bodies. Secondly, it means that we don't have to worry about putting on unwanted weight and having to deal with the consequences of that on our cardiovascular health.
Higher cAMP levels are strongly linked to increased rates of fat loss. They can even improve the efficacy of other fat burning compounds.

This is why today, Swanson Full Spectrum Coleus Forskohlii is first and foremost one of nature's most effective fat burning supplements.
